Create a Private Channel in Teams

Private channels enable focused discussions inside existing Teams. 

Issue

How to Create a Private Channel

1. Go to the Team:
   • Open the Teams tab and locate the team where you want to add a private channel.
2. Open More Options:
   • Click the three dots (…) next to the team name.
3. Select 'Add channel':
   • Choose the Add channel option.
4. Enter Channel Details:
   • Provide a Channel Name and optional Description.
5. Set Privacy to Private:
   • Under Privacy/Channel Type, select 'Private – Only specific team members have access'.
6. Create the Channel:
   • Click Create.
7. Add Members:
   • Add specific team members when prompted.
   • Only existing team members (and guests if allowed) can be added.

NOTES:

• Private channels show a lock icon.
• Team owners/members can create them unless restricted.
• Each team can have up to 30 private channels.
